Glow Babies-Original Oil Painting

Developing the color palette and hidden story for this work was an adventure lead purely by my curiosity and intuition, instead of a thumbnail and a plan. What I knew going in was just the vision of tendrils trailing off the tips of each petal, an inspired lily of a different kind. Their lines dance to and fro, framing the central flowers. I knew that these tendrils would have little flowers at their tips, but as I found their paths, they wanted to see each other. The tiny flowers took on a life of their own and became curious beings themselves, winding and searching within their limitations. In a moment, you can see the way they perceive each other's light and face one another. The glow around each flower was a surprise in this painting's story, as I muddled the mauve around each shape. Darkening the atmospheric strip that helped me to make sense of the space became the step to find the glowing halo around each tiny flower. This game of discovery is part of the joy I find in my process. Not having much of a plan allows me to ask questions along the way and receive answers as small pieces start to connect, reveal, and spark intrigue. And for me these aren't big surprises like a new character in the story out of no where, but matters of color, vibration, and atmosphere. But these familiar strangers can still feel like a question.
